ADHD ASSESSMENT

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) describes a persistent pattern of difficulty sustaining attention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that interferes with functioning.

The Harbour Clinic offers a comprehensive assessment of ADHD (and diagnosis where relevant) with 3 components:

Form

QUESTIONNAIRES

Questionnaires to assess potential mental health conditions which may contribute to attentional difficulties.

If possible, questionnaires about ADHD-like behaviours are also completed by someone who knew you in childhood and someone who knows you currently.

These are completed online prior to your session.

Interview

CLINICAL INTERVIEW

A structured clinical interview with a clinical psychologist, assessing the key criteria for ADHD.

The interview takes place remotely (via videoconference).

The interview typically takes 2 hours.

Computers

COMPUTERISED ASSESSMENT

A computer-administered test (QbCheck) that provides objective data regarding attention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity.

The test is completed remotely and requires access to a computer with a web camera.

The test typically takes approximately 30 minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions

HOW DO I KNOW IF I AM LIKELY TO MEET CRITERIA FOR A DIAGNOSIS OF ADHD?

While no screening questionnaire is 100% accurate, completing the following questionnaire may provide some insight into the degree to which you experience ADHD-like symptoms: https://psychology-tools.com/test/adult-adhd-self-report-scale

HOW MUCH DOES THE ASSESSMENT COST?

$980 total for assessment and report.

Half the fee is payable before your session.

The balance is due before the report is produced.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE IT TAKE TO GET MY RESULTS?

Once you have completed the assessment process a report will usually be available within 1-2 weeks.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT IF I RECEIVE A DIAGNOSIS OF ADHD?

Treatment for ADHD most commonly involves a combination of medication and behavioural strategies.

Medication can help you improve your capacity to sustain attention in order to learn new behavioural strategies.

Many people with ADHD find an ADHD coach or ADHD skills group program helpful.

DO YOU PRESCRIBE MEDICATION?

Psychologists are able to provide a diagnosis of ADHD, however we do not prescribe medication. If a diagnosis of ADHD is made we recommend referral to a psychiatrist for medication (if desired), and are able to recommend a number of psychiatrists who work with adults with ADHD.

WHAT IS THE BENEFIT OF UNDERGOING AN ADHD ASSESSMENT?

Often those with undiagnosed ADHD or other difficulties with concentration, motivation, hyperactivity or impulsivity have been struggling for years without knowing why.

Some see their difficulties as character flaws. For many it is a relief to understand the source of their difficulties - whether they be ADHD or are more likely to be related to another diagnosis.

Although we do not prescribe medication, having an existing diagnosis if you do end up seeing a psychiatrist can save time, and some psychiatrists ask for a prior assessment with a psychologist before your psychiatry appointment.
